The majority
of the Street Children are the product of broken homes, whether through the
death of one or both parents or marital break-up. They run away from homes
where they were hungry, abused, neglected or abandoned. The present harsh
economic climate has increased poverty and aggravated the problems of the urban
masses.
WHERE THEY
ARE
By Day they
work as bus conductors, head-loaders (market porters), car cleaners, petty
traders and helpers of local food vendors. A few, mostly from the northern
states, beg or lead beggars. When necessary they steal to survive.
By Night they
sleep under bridges, in motor parks, in broken-down vehicles, on the beach or in
abandoned, derelict or partly-built buildings.
